This series is notable for the author's ability to credibly adopt the voice of Jane Austen as the narrator. Barron works the events detailed in these mysteries between, and into, actual events reported by Austen and family in their memoirs and letters. In this title, Barron has only to imagine a carriage accident and an unexpected invitation to spend Christmas at an (actual) estate in the neighborhood of her brother's vicarage - and the outline of her plot and setting are established. The Chute family were major political figures of the day, and artist Raphael West did visit them, and Austen and her family did know them. Add some (fictional) guests and permit the (actual) Treaty of Ghent to go missing at a crucial moment ... and Jane is once again in the perfect spot to save England from the machinations of Napoleon. If only all our novelist were so clever. Great fun.
