In 1930s Paris a young woman is teaching herself indifference. She has escaped personal tragedy and has come to France to find courage and seek independence. She tells herself to expect nothing, especially not kindness, least of all from men. Tomorrow, she resolves, she will dye her hair blonde. -- Rhys creates the powerfully modern portrait of Sophie Jansen, whose emancipation is far more painful and complicated than she could expect.

Published in 1939, this book tells the story of a woman on her way down - alcohol, drugs - suffering from loneliness and despair. Told through her eyes, she spends 10 days in Paris where she lived when she was younger. It is totally inside her head and modernist in that way.
