At the bar of a grand hotel in a small Irish town sits 84-year-old Maurice Hannigan. He's alone, as usual, though tonight is anything but. Pull up a stool and charge your glass, because Maurice is finally ready to tell his story. Over the course of this evening, he will raise five toasts to the five people who have meant the most to him. Through these stories - of unspoken joy and regret, a secret tragedy kept hidden, a fierce love that never found its voice - the life of one man will be powerful and poignantly laid bare.

Such a great story. I couldn’t put it down. Very touching. I can’t imagine anyone not liking this book.

I was disappointed in this book. Parts of it were delightful and very "Irish" but it seemed contrived at times and I did not like the ending!

5 stars for this story of an ordinary life, extraordinarily told.

A quiet story of one man reminiscing about his life and all its joys, regrets, sorrows, and lessons. It is like pulling up a stool at the pub and a getting caught up in a conversation with a regular at the end of the bar, complete with ramblings, tangents and asides to the bartender. The audio format is highly recommended.

Author Anne Griffin has created an unforgettable and poignant literary character, eighty-four-year-old Maurice Hannigan. In WHEN ALL IS SAID, Maurice looks back on his long life and the 5 people most important to him. Told in the first-person and set on the Emerald Isle, this book is full of Irish charm and lingo. It took me a while to get into this book, but after the first chapter, the pace picked up as it began to tug on my heartstrings. Moving and powerful, with moments of humor, this book will stay with the reader long after it’s finished. Keep a handkerchief handy.

I had read a few too many poorly done family dramas when I began this one, and after the first few pages nearly set it aside fearing it was yet another, but make it to chapter 2 and you will be rewarded for your efforts. This is by far the most moving book I've read all year. Through five "toasts", an elderly man tells the story of his loves and regrets. I felt like I was back in Ireland and I could nearly feel the breath of the characters they were that real to me. For once I don't want to analyze this text, I just want to savor how touching it was, and all that it made me think about what life is like for someone who has lost a beloved wife or husband. I am grateful for the insights into what life can be like for an elderly person. I'm adding Maurice to the list of my favorite main characters for his fierce loyalty, gorgeous defiance and nasty old demeanor. Thoroughly engaging and hard to put down, this book is a gem.

As an 84 year man raises five toasts in a bar he tells the story of his life. It is rather stereotyped and sentimental but in a nice Irish way.

This is a remarkable book. She takes the simple everyday lives of people and makes you care about them at a deep level. Even people who are cruel or don't have any redeeming qualities are vulnerable and have a story. This author makes you care about the people she writes about.

It seems I have a love for stories where old men reminisce about their lives. This one is fabulous. This old Irish guy goes to his favourite pub to raise 5 final toasts to the 5 most important people in his life. As we hear the stories of these people we see the fabric of his life woven together. It is a gentle, bittersweet story that will leave you feeling reflective.

I really did feel like I knew Maurice so well by the time his story came to an end, one filled with grief, despair, pain, longing, humanity and above all, so much love. Brought a tear to my eye - highly recommended.

This may be a work of fiction but it's real life. Beautiful read.
