Some films are a speeding train. This one is a hammock on a Saturday afternoon. There's no dialogue, the pace is quite slow and the meaning of the story is subject to interpretation. Yet once you're on its wavelength, the film is a mesmerizing experience.

I agree with the description on the back cover of the film. But, I guess I was expecting something, or more. Or maybe I’m shallow and can’t see the metaphysical message of the film. “There's no dialogue, the pace is quite slow and the meaning of the story is subject to interpretation.” It’s beautifully drawn or animated.

Stunning, and gorgeous, thought provoking, amazing animation for the adult audience. I'm still in awe. A masterpiece!

One of the most beautiful animation i have ever seen. My 6 y.o child and me loved every second of this creation. Also as bonus to DVD, the animator shares some very interesting scetches, shows how to draw some of the personages. It is a chef-d'ouvre! bravo!

A deviation from the traditional Ghibli style. Ghibli or Miyazaki's style had a pureness and sweetness to it. This one has a lot more depth, but in a melancholic way. It is still good, because it explores more of the humanistic side, whereas Ghibli's style was more uplifting and cute.

A modern classic. Imagine Ghibli Studio backing a Belgian animator: no dialogues; no big eyes in the manner of Japanese animé; no facial expressions so to speak (remember Tintin with dotted eyes?) YET the subtle colour gradations, the ripples of the sea, and above all, the shadow animations (most scenes happened above or under water) make this a unique experience. Dreamed of a Caribbean vacation with deserted beaches and pristine seas? This is your no-budget ticket. For those who enjoy Hergé, check out June and the Extraordinary World.

Beautiful! Engaging, thoughtful story. Very much enjoyed watching this animated feature.

This is a decent film- the animation is outstandingly beautiful- however, the story isn't entirely successful in my opinion ( there's a bit too much use of ambiguous symbols used for my taste ). Still, the film is a wonder to behold and it is a good film, one that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Be prepared for the fact this film doesn't have any dialogue ( a couple of shouts here and there ), once you settle into the films rhythms then you can enjoy the experience.

Although it is a very heavy movie, it is still amazing. Think of Tom Hanks' Castaway in animation. Don't expect a light and fun cartoon/film. Yet, still amazing. I loved the lack of dialogue but maintaining the communication. Thoroughly recommend this when you're in a place for something deeper than most all other movies and not just the animated ones.

I was not impressed with this movie. The animation seemed simplistic and just did not feel like a Studio Ghibli film.
