Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best--the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk--or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for. It's time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

I cannot add in anything more than what reviewer alburke47 offered as it's a great review of a fab book. It's about friendship and bromance and fighting monsters in a band. I can't wait for the sequels!

Let's get this out out the way first. You've probably heard that this book is funny. It is. It's a riot. I don't think I've laughed out loud so much since reading Hitchhiker's. But this is so much for than just a few laughs, it's an ode to friendship that lasts the test of time.

The merecenary band, Saga, has given up their glory days and settled into married life with varying degrees of success. When their former leader Gabe, comes knocking on Clay's door with the intention of "getting the band back together," Clay has his misgivings. He's the only member who seems to have settled into married life well, and knows the risks of their former life. But friendship (and his daughter) persuade him to venture forth one last time against odds that are stacked greatly against them.

The story is told from the perspective of Clay, the least "exciting" member of the who sees his sole skill as being a cold-blooded killer ("the right kind of wrong"), but he is the voice of reason (within reason) and his faultless loyalty keeps the band moving forward. The story is rooted very much in Dungeons and Dragons culture - almost every D&D monster makes an appearance - and also music with the old ways of the bands giving way to a new style of mercenary where popularity takes precedence over real glory. Saga are under no illusions that their former glory was due in no small part to dumb luck, and in certain situations throughout the tale, this shines forth, giving it a sense of realism. But then, as it is said, it is better to be lucky than good.

To close with, the author's wit does sparkle throughout the novel, but at times there are moments that can be considered touching, and they are dealt with in traditional male fashion - expressions of gratitude or love are met with an uncomfortable shrug. If you want deep and thoughtful fantasy, this may disappoint. If you want a rollicking adventure, a good laugh and to reminisce about your old mates, then start reading. I've read about 90 books this year. I think this may be my favourite.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's a satisfying mix of humor, thrills and adventure. The story and the characters are interesting and well-developed, and the pacing is very good. The book, while long, doesn't get bogged down or boring.

I just finished the book and I am reminded of William Feather's phrase, "Finishing a good book is like leaving a good friend". I'm looking forward to more by Eames.

In some ways, this book reminded me of an updated version of Conan, although with more developed characters, humor and swearing. There's a lot of fantasy violence - heads lopped off, guts spilling out, and blood everywhere.

One of the best books I have read this year. Great characters. Lots of action. And real connection between the cast. I was sad when I finished it.

Really fun. Loved the very obvious connection between mercenary bands and rock bands - those allusions made this a fantastic read.

Humor, character and good drama, the kind where you cry into your pillow while you finish the book are all here. The book has great pacing (something that can be problematic in epic fantasy novels) and a very modern feel. As many have already said, it is the best fantasy novel I have read in years.

Hands-down one of the best Fantasy novels that I've read in a long time! The author manages to get the humor and larger genre references just right without going over-board.

This book. This book! I actually discovered it after reading reviews of River of Teeth and the reviewer wrote that it was a great premise that fell flat (agreed) and it was doubly disappointing since they read it after finishing reading Kings of the Wyld which was a great premise AND an actually great book. So naturally, I had to get a copy. This book has it all, adventure and heart and humor. You'll laugh, you'll cry, it will change your life (or at least thoroughly entertain you). I can say with all honesty I can't WAIT to see what Eames does with the rest of his writing career and I can only hope it is a long one.

This is the fantasy novel to go to if you just want something FUN. It's action-packed, goofy, still full of heart, and wild ride. I think people who play D&D will definitely love this, but certainly anyone else can enjoy it too. It's also interesting to have main characters who are at the end of their careers, rather than just starting out. It makes for a different hero's journey than we normally get.
