A habitually clowning around old guy inserted himself in his daughter's high pressure oil industry consultant job activities. The first scenes set the stage of the odd father-daughter relationship, followed by a string of odder and older incidents in Frankfurt and Bucharest that included a surprisingly good rendition of "The Greatest Love of All" performed by Sandra Hüller as the daughter (watch in "Videos") in Bucharest and a perfectly staged BD party in BD suits. No special effects or violence, just a good old fashion comedy drama that professional critics love it to utter desperation, just like the old dad Winfried in the film:

7.5/10 IMDb
92% Rotten Tomatoes
4/4 Roger Ebert
By a wide margin the funniest almost-three-hour German comedy you will ever see. The NYTimes
Be honest, when was the last time you can remember a German comedy feature film making international headlines and garnering global awards?

etc etc etc

Weirdly entertaining.

At nearly three hours, "Toni Erdmann" is expansive but rarely self-indulgent, and the emotional payoff, when it comes, feels truly and bizarrely earned.

This is a perfect example of why Germans are not known for making movies; The country, as a whole, should get out of the art business altogether and stick to engineering and medecine. While there are a few (slightly) humorous scenes there are too many awkward pauses, gross situations, and surreal introspection to make it enjoyable much less something you could ever re-watch. My guess is that the people that really like this movie are total weirdos.

The Chicago Trib critic - "...about the endless, free-floating bs women must contend with in a capitalistic patriarchy." Yeah, I kinda felt that Toni's daughter was always getting criticized by her male business associates with comments suggesting she was a little short on her suggestions, plans, conclusions, etc. , etc. And I kina felt that the males' critiques were relatively baseless bs. Toni, prankster in chief, seems to be in the movie for her daughter to decide, what is worse, the business associates' bs or her fathers continual prankstering. The viewers with one star either do not like theatre of the absurd or were of the belief that the film was a simple drama, comedy or comdram.

Toni Erdmann" is a 162-minute comedy/drama from Germany about a prank-loving older man who pays a surprise visit to his corporate consultant adult daughter and begins to throw her uptight life into chaos. That plot description could easily apply to a traditional Hollywood comedy that probably wouldn't be very good, but the genius of writer-director Maren Ade's film is how she portrays these characters like fully dimensional human beings and grounds their actions in a believable way even as things escalate to hilariously crazy levels. The movie also works because Ade mixes the humor with real earned drama and emotion, so that by the end you really end up caring about this lovably awkward father-daughter relationship.

If I could grant Maren Ade's third feature the rating it deserves, its title would be followed not by five stars but by a constellation. The Academy blew it. Toni Erdmann is by far the finest foreign language film of the past year.

Contrived, cartoonish and preposterous. The only good thing about it is: You've never seen anything quite like it. Here's hoping you never do. Whatever it's agenda: feminist or familial reconciliation the essential ingredient for comedy is laughter. In the nearly three hours I think I laughed two and a half times.

The film had a horrible ending, IMHO.

It's one of the best comedies in recent years, being intelligent, disconcerting and poignant at the same time.

How was your night with the Chinese?
-Well, after 30 minutes they were drunk. So I sat there for five hours, listening to Mandarin. But I sold one flat, at least.
-So that's good.
Oh, yeah, because we were just fighting over...who had the most horrible weekend.
-Steph was in Naples.
How was it? What happened? It's filthy, the food was disgusting. Even the kids were dying to get back, so, you know.
--Well, I probably had the most horrible weekend of my entire life, actually. Yeah. My father visited me spontaneously, without any warning. He was there standing in my office... pretending he wanted to bring me my birthday present... but actually he was just having a crisis because his dog died at home. Henneberg (CEO of company) was wanting me to go out with him and his wife the whole time. ... And my father was sitting around, making spaghetti... trying to talk with me about the meaning of life, whatever that is. Strange.

I've hired a substitute daughter.
-Perfect. She will call on your birthday instead of me.
And what's most important when dealing with the clients?
-That no concept makes sense if the client doesn't want it. The art is to tell the client what he actually wants.
Good evening. I'm only the father.
-Henneberg. Are you visiting?
A spontaneous decision. Never been to Romania. I'm actually here to negotiate with her. She's hardly home anymore so I hired a substitute daughter. Now comes the question who pays her.
- That's a modern solution.
- Is the other daughter better?
The cakes are better. She cuts my toenails.

So... Are you a bit happy here, at least?
-What do you mean by happiness"? It's such a strong word...
I mean do you have a bit of a life, too? Like going to the movies or something?
-Well, yes... just doing something you enjoy.
Lots of words around here: fun, happiness, life... We should sort it out. What do you think it's worth living for?
-If you want to discuss the big topics... I can't say that off the top of my head. I really just wanted to know how you're doing.
I know that. But then you should have your own answers.
Women's group? What are the themes?
-Gender quotas, sexual harassment at work, things like that.
Business nail polish?

It's actually more interesting and Romanian than the Ceausescu palace. It's Europe's largest mall and no one has money to buy anything.
And who did you leave Willi with?
-Well, Willi... Willi, unfortunately, has died.
What? I'm so sorry.
-He was an old dog.
Why didn't you call me?
-Because I don't always have the time, either.
Dad, these processes mean hundreds of employees being transferred and later laid off. These decisions are unpopular, so he would need to blame someone else. Then you can read in the paper that some consulting firm has ruined something.

The Dombrechts are cutting your hedges tomorrow. You are blocking their sun.
-At last. I'll be able to shoot right into their living room.
About what's worth of living. The problem is... it's so often about getting things done. You do this, you do that... And in the meantime... life just passes by. But how are we supposed to hang on to moments? Now I sometimes sit there and remember how you learned to ride your bike... or how I once found you at a bus stop. But you only realize that afterwards. In the moment itself it's not possible.
Please, can you just tell him not to fire that man or something?
-That's up to him. The more he fires, the fewer I have to fire.
Do you have any plans in life other than slipping fart cushions under people?
-I don't own a fart cushion.
I know men your age who still have ambitions.
