When you read it, pay attention to the timeline and names.

I so loved the beautiful translation and, while the stories - or perhaps I should say story - are a bit grim, I found the book intriguing.

an enigmatic non-linear novel
short-listed for the 2016 Giller Prize
if that appeals - just read it, as some reviews have too much information
I thoroughly enjoyed the concept and the writing.

This is a beautifully written book. The tight, poetic images and concisely chosen diction sings to me. Like admiring a painting that speaks to your soul. Leroux loads insightful philosophic nuggets into her characters’ minds effortlessly. Essentially this is a collection of four different novellas and I appreciated the shared general theme of close family groupings. But I’m confused about why Leroux chose to splice the stories and structure them intermingled. The very brief appearance of one character in another’s story at an elapsed time hardly seems significant, unless to say the obvious: “and life goes on”. The structure is reminiscent of David Mitchell’s "Cloud Atlas".

One of the five finalists for the Giller prize. I am loving this.
