Machine learning is the automation of discovery--the scientific method on steroids--that enables intelligent robots and computers to program themselves. No field of science today is more important yet more shrouded in mystery. Pedro Domingos, one of the field's leading lights, lifts the veil for the first time to give us a peek inside the learning machines that power Google, Amazon, and your smartphone. He charts a course through machine learning's five major schools of thought, showing how they turn ideas from neuroscience, evolution, psychology, physics, and statistics into algorithms ready to serve you. Step by step, he assembles a blueprint for the future universal learner?the Master Algorithm--and discusses what it means for you, and for the future of business, science, and society.

In Texas they'd say "All hat, no cattle". Buzzwords galore, but not much substance. For a beginning computer science student interested in the general topics involved with the study of computer heuristics, computer learning machines, might be worth a go as a way get started. To get the lay of the land in other words. Of if you have a job interview next week in the field, and need something to talk about. But for those interested in how computer learning is actually done, the practical aspects, the fundamental science, this isn't the book. Like I say, all hat, no cattle.

This is a most excellent book, probably more directed at those interested in, or employed in the area of, computer science, but equally understandable to the general public. Covers the spectrum of machine learning (essentially the bleeding edge of AI today) and Prof. Domingos does a wonderful job delving into the extreme depths of Bayes Theorem! [Just wished he'd mentioned Cornell's Eureqa program, but he still covers a wide range of topics.]
