Popular since its original publication more than 25 years ago, Leonard Cohen's classic book of contemporary psalms is now beautifully repackaged.   Internationally celebrated for his writing and his music, Leonard Cohen is revered as one of the great writers, performers, and most consistently daring artists of our time. Now beautifully repackaged, the poems inBook of Mercybrim with praise, despair, anger, doubt and trust. Speaking from the heart of the modern world, yet in tones that resonate with an older devotional tradition, these verses give voice to our deepest, most powerful intuitions.

The book speaks in very metaphorical terms that is admittedly very hard to grasp through the book. Because of this, it is very hard to understand where the story is going. Perhaps it’s just me misunderstanding the book in general, but I’m often left very confused of to where the book is going with each page I read. I do see its about someone calling out to God, the the text are very clouded in religious and philosophical wording that I just can’t seem to grasp. Again, maybe I’m just not that type of reader, but I must again stress it’s hard to truly understand what’s going on in the story. I’m ultimately left disappointed and even uninterested in the book, because though I see there is a potentially deep, beautiful story underneath, I just can’t seem to find it through the its tangled use of metaphorical phrases and wording. Even though the book is short, I would have expected at least some things I could properly take away from the story. I do wish I could understand the book better. Ultimately, I can’t confidently recommend this book to anyone for I fear that they will run into the same difficulties I had when reading this book. Score: 1 / 5. @Ay-J of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board
