I would not recommend this movie. Much of the lighting in the movie was lacking. Even with my blinds closed, I had trouble seeing the actors at times. The ending was about as worse as it can get. All though the movie I was expecting some kind of improvement, but it never happened. I guess if you want to be depressed, watch it, but beware of this movie if you want a happy ending.

A fiercely dark, but amazingly entertaining film. Visibly stunning throughout, it addresses the fears, hopes and fate of people in a remote Russian village and the interplay of corrupting power, genuine evil and the devastating impact of the interplay of state, church, and society on individuals and families.

Bleak film with solid acting and stunning cinematography. A dose of reality.

It's a good film about the rot setting in, in a small town- Vancouverites should be able to see the parallels with their own town quite easily.

Heartbreaking story of high-ranking corruption and "the little guy" trying to fight it.

I found it so slow moving I couldn't get into it. I ended up not watching the whole thing.

"At a time of ever-tightening censorship and repressive new laws, he has made a distinctly dissident film that's an open challenge to Putin's rule."-Anton Dolin, Film Comment
Yes, it is slow, bleak, and long, but what did you expect? This Oscar-nominated film from 2014 is maybe the most significant and powerful Russian film of recent years. Set in a small town, it re-enacts the Biblical story of Job, while also critiquing the corruption of Russian politics and the oppressiveness of the Putin regime and those, including the Church, who support him. It is grim, but rewarding and full of staggering imagery. An important film. "Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope?"-Job

A dramatic, bleak, beautifully shot, and rousingly poignant snapshot of blatant bureaucratic corruption in a small Russian town. It's easy to see it as just commentary on contemporary Russian governance but in the end you get the feeling that the film is pointing to something larger about the nature of bloated bureaucracies and government. The title itself is a reference to the classic treatise Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes. Highly Recommended.
