This is the kind of movie that wants to give away the ending but you just fight it the whole time. Then youre like: "duh"!

Good movie. Moves slowly but stay with the movie. You will be questioning it long after it's finished.

This is a "slow burn" film; you must stick with it to the bitter end. TH and I've watched this several times and each viewing leaves me with questions. A nice change of pace from our usual mindless (Marvel) films.

A small, odd film-but it's really good- the final act kept me thinking for quite a while after the end of the film. There are deeper undercurrents to this movie which might engage the more perceptive viewers out there.

I rather agree with each of the other varied reviews. G.Rush kept me watching out of simply curiosity, I find his acting compelling. Yes, a bit 'simple' in plot, a stretch of imagination, etc. Well, there was little else to choose from on the idiot box & I just wanted to eat popcorn in a comfy chair.

The film is almost rescued from its tortuous plot by Rush's compelling performance.

This movie is okay.

(Spoiler alert) I was quite disappointed at Giuseppe Tornatore, who made a few wonderful movies, my favorite being Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. Not even Ennio Morricone's music saved this silly movie. I can't imagine a seasoned, shrewd business man would fall for such juvenile plot, 'cmon! And how was he able to have a room of gargantuan proportions and hide it from view? Geoffrey Rush was good, but a bit hysterical at times; the other actors seemed all wrong for the parts. Most definitely not my cup of tea.

I didn't have the plot figured out for sure until well past the halfway mark (in spite of insistent suspicions), and for that reason alone I give it high stars (the outcome of most movies is usually very evident, very early). I do wish the "lovers" had been closer in age, their romantic relationship was difficult for me to believe. However, the director may have intended the age difference exactly in order to counter any disbelief in this unlikely liason between two such people, by allowing us to believe in the possibility of an archetypical paternalistic/child (caretaker/caretakee) relationship. The ending was also a bit of a surprise. Just when the movie reached the conclusion I had come to expect (but quite cleverly, with a few twists and turns), there followed a series of other, slightly less climactic scenes that leave one once again questioning the possibilities.

Having to watch four IFC Films/Sundance Selects promos for 5 minutes or more prior to reaching the Main Menu screen was very annoying. If I had known how "The Best Offer" would end, I would have simply "ejected" the DVD ... and returned to reading a book.

From IMDb:
Billy Whistler: Emotions are like work of art. They can be forged they seem just like the original but they are forgery.
Virgil Oldman: Forgery.
Billy Whistler: Everything can be fake Virgil: joy, pain, hate, illness, recovery... even love.

Virgil Oldman: What's it like living with a woman?
Lambert: Like taking part in an auction sale. You never know if yours will be the best offer.

Virgil Oldman: [Inspecting a painting] It's a fake.
First daughter: How is that possible? It's beautiful!
Virgil Oldman: I didn't say it was ugly, I said it wasn't authentic.
