After the electronic experiments Age of Adz and The BQE, I was pleased when 2015’s Carrie and Lowell returned to the sparse and intimate Sufjan I’ve always loved. I mean, Adz is great, but it’s not the same. Inspired by his mom and stepdad there’s a lot of autobiography here.

Much of the lyrics are more than I can comprehend; some biblical references and some geographic locations. However, I can hear the heart and the music is overall beautiful.

Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell is one of the most heartfelt, deeply personal and beautiful albums to come out in recent memory. On this album Sufjan mourns the loss of his mother and his stepfather, remembering the time they spent together in Oregon when he was a child. Every single song on this album maintains the same stark beauty that Sufjan has shown himself capable of before. The album opens with the gorgeous Death with Dignity followed immediately by the equally touching Should Have Known Better, both songs containing gentle instrumentals and soft vocals setting the mood for the rest of the album. The album’s best song appears about halfway through with the stunning Fourth of July. The haunting piano plays behind Sufjan’s vocals. “Make the most if your life while it is rife” he sings before ending the song by calmly repeating “We’re all gonna die.” Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens is one of those rare albums that perfectly captures a feeling or a moment in time. I cannot praise it enough, that is why I feel this album deserves 5 out of 5 stars.

Wikipedia :: "The album met with critical acclaim, receiving a 9.3 from Pitchfork under "best new music," and an initial score of 90 from Metacritic. The album follows the nuances and trials of life with Stevens' mother, Carrie, who was diagnosed bipolar and schizophrenic, and suffered from drug addiction and substance abuse, and includes Stevens' stepfather, Lowell Brams."

Heartbreaking, vulnerable, and stunningly honest. An album that you have to digest but is well worth the time to do so. This will work its way under the toughest of skins and stay with the listener well after they've finished listening.

Beware the track "Fourth of July"....

A beautiful. & stunning album, like Nick Drake but for 2015.

The evil it spread like a fever ahead
It was night when you died, my firefly
What could I have said to raise you from the dead?
Oh could I be the sky on the Fourth of July?
