Fall of Giants is my first Ken Follett book. I was interested in reading it after watching the tv adaptations of Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. For me, Jeffery Archer's Clifton Chronicles was a page turned. The first half of Giants was slow going. I enjoyed the Billy, Ethel, Maud, Walter, & Fitz story best. I've put Winter of the World on my for later shelf and will continue the trilogy eventually.

"Fall of Giants" is the first book in the Century Trilogy. I had read the following two and since the books trace the same families and their successive generations some of the plot was not a surprise to me. Also, perhaps I have read one two many books by Follett becuae this book didn't grip me at the beginning. But as it progressed and dealt with historic events like women's suffrage, World War I and the Soviet revolution I got engrossed. All in all a well-researched, well-written book.

Ken Follett writes so well and you can really imagine how things must have been during the early twentieth century in Europe. I liked the character development in this story. You really grow to care about these people and what they are going through. Sometimes Follett is a bit too descriptive in a salacious way when he describes the lives of his characters: it was a peeve of mine, and it bothered me a bit while reading. I recommend this story though especially if you like historical fiction!

Great historical tale of WW I, the Russian Revolution and the fight for women’s suffrage in Great Britain from the viewpoints of various people: Welsh common people, English upper crust, Germans, Russians and Americans. At 985 pages it is a bit intimidating, but it is well worth the read. Liked Billy's speech in chapter 42 - right on the money. Highly recommended

Nicely developed tale of pseudo-historical interest from the perspective of a committed liberal (all of whom should be committed) with enough soft-porn to interest women.

Great historical fiction novel. Follett took me all of the world and let me peer into the lives of these families at the start of WWI. It is a large, and therefore intimidating, book, but it is well worth the time it takes to read it. Get the ebook format and you won't have to worry about carrying around a heavy book.

This book felt like a porny Downton Abbey. Fascinating historical overview, but Follett's juxtaposition of a modern, explicitly narrated sexual ethos with historical events was rather jarring. Loved the narrator.

It is always interesting to read about the motivation and the social mores which drove the world into WWI. The book is well researched and characters are heartbreakingly real.
