When two young girls go missing in rural Herefordshire, police constable and wizard-in-training Peter Grant is sent out of London to check that nothing supernatural is involved. It's purely routine?Nightingale, Peter's superior, thinks he'll be done in less than a day. But Peter's never been one to walk away from someone in trouble, so when nothing overtly magical turns up he volunteers his services to the local police, who need all the help they can get. But because the universe likes a joke as much as the next sadistic megalomaniac, Peter soon comes to realize that dark secrets underlie the picturesque fields and villages of the countryside and there might just be work for Britain's most junior wizard after all. Soon Peter's in a vicious race against time, in a world where the boundaries between reality and fairy have never been less clear.

After the jaw-dropping conclusion to Broken Homes, this follow-up is a bit disappointing. There is no new information about Lesley or the Faceless Man. None whatsoever. Precisely that which I was most eager for is entirely lacking in this installment. The prominent role of Beverley Brook is a welcome addition. The story is interesting enough, but not what I wanted. It seems whenever one book advances the Faceless Man plot, the next takes two giant leaps back.

I have been bingeing on the Peter Grant books as if they were candy...cannot put them down! That said, this book felt a bit unpolished; it was too slow getting started and too quick to end. In other words, I wish there had been less introduction and more denouement. Nonetheless, I like that this book had a different feel than the others. It takes place in the English countryside, near the Welsh border, and it has something of a Midsummer Night's Dream flavor. I recommend this book to anglophiles.

This was the best Peter Grant book to date. It brought so many elements of the series together, and showed us how each of the characters has grown. And, it was just a lot of fun!

Can’t get enough of this series...but definitely start at the beginning, with Midnight Riot. Love that this incorporates the experience of a POC in England from an immigrant community.

This book was a fun read, but I didn't like it as much as I liked the first 4 books. It takes place outside of London in a small country town where two girls have been kidnapped and there is a possibility of magic being involved. It has unicorns and My Little Pony references. We also get to meet new creatures and beings. I like Peter's relationship with Beverly who is such a fascinating character. I also find it amusing when he has to spin things so people won't know there is magic involved.

Another great book in a consistently good series. Start with "Midnight Riot" to get the full effect.

The author continues with his narrators strong voice, drawing you deeper into this magical world where anything is possible. However, this volume drifts slightly further from what seems to be the overarching plot of the series, as well as from the heart of London, and for me loses something by it. I continue to look forwards to future installments however, as this series is much to good to put down after one book that only marginally failed to meet the previously high set of expectations.

The most recent story in the Rivers of London series. I can't get enough of this cleverly written and amusing slightly paranomal mystery series set in London.

Ben Aaronovitch does it again. Great fun!
