This novel was written before the more awarded "The Spinning Heart" and is actually the better book. It tells the story of a young Irish man in 2001, "a bit of a gom", bullied by others and left alone after the deaths of his parents. His farm becomes valuable and he is pressured by the community to sell it and is befriended by two people motivated by greed. This is a portrait of a community torn apart by greed with tragic results.
