Just as she was present in the very first moments of life as a midwife, Jennifer Worth also went on to witness the different experiences of patients drawing towards the end of their days. As a nurse and ward sister, she came across stories that were often poignant or touching. Jennifer began to ask questions about the way we have moved away from a natural acceptance of death and what are we so afraid of?

This was a very worthwhile read and very informative. She makes the dying process seem so peaceful and spiritual. That is comforting to those who are watching a loved one die. It is aweful to read of the painful lengths that the medical profession go to to prolong life for a few more days or weeks.

Unlike her 3 Call the Midwife books, this book is really about death & dying & her work & experiences with palliative care patients & friends. Still very interesting though but it might be a difficult book for people who are uncomfortable with the subject of death & dying. I don't think she got all her facts correct in the book either concerning certain illnesses, symptoms, etc. Plus, she is speaking solely from her experiences with the British health care system. Many things there are quite different from Canada - different terms, different procedures, etc. Nonetheless, it is a very thought-provoking read & I would certainly highly recommend it!

This nurse, mother, author was/is such a gem. And so generous in sharing her life story, her compassion and her beliefs with the rest of us.
