Sussex, 1912. In a churchyard, villagers gather on the night when the ghosts of those who will die in the coming year are thought to be seen. Here, where the estuary leads out to the sea, superstitions still hold sway. Standing alone is the taxidermist's daughter. At seventeen, Constantia Gifford lives with her father in a decaying house: it is all that is left of Gifford's once world-famous museum of taxidermy. The stuffed animals that used to grace every parlour are out of fashion, leaving Gifford a disgraced and bitter man. The bell begins to toll and all eyes are fixed on the church. No one sees the gloved hand pick up a flint. As the last notes fade into the dark, a woman lies dead.

This book is quite haunting. I found it difficult to follow the different characters, and the map at the beginning was grossly incomplete. However, the characters were interesting and the plot very engaging. A good read, but quite disturbing.

A dark, gothic suspense mystery that was a quick read. The plot's been done before, but this one has a different twist.

An atmospheric and macabre page-turner of a Gothic read that I couldn't put down (even though I really wanted to at times due to some pretty gory passages). The author's descriptive writing made the setting feel very real and I loved the complex and interesting main characters. Another great Halloween read!

I was drawn in from nearly the first page and had a hard time putting it down. The vivid descriptions and stylistic sentence fragments kept me quite entertained. ;) The story was disturbing and more macabre than my usual taste but I had to know how it ended, and I found myself engrossed in the quirky characters of Connie, Harry, Davey, and Gifford. I am curious to check out the author's other books for sure!
