In 1970, singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez relaesed his debut album to little fanfare in the US. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.

"Cause I lost my job two weeks before Christmas."
I'd advise watching the good, but overrated, documentary before listening to the soundtrack, which includes music from his only two studio albums, as well as songs from his unfinished third album. The movie sells him, especially to his rapidly devoted South African fans, as a figure on par with Elvis and Dylan and it does't detract from his stoned folk-rock to say he does't quite measure up. There is some of Dylan's lysergic wordplay, a bit of Donovan's hippie folk and some of Phil Ochs's social consciousness. Both of his albums have been reissued by Light in the Attic.
