Classic Malley-- to avoid being shipped off to boarding school, she takes off with some guy she met online. Poor Richard ... he knows his cousin's in trouble before she does. Wild Skink-- he's a ragged, one-eyed ex-governor of Florida, and enough of a renegade to think he can track Malley down. With Richard riding shotgun, the unlikely pair scour the state, undaunted by blinding storms, crazed pigs, flying bullets, and giant gators.

Incredible book, funny but relevant. Kirby Heyborne does great voice work as the narrator Richard, and is outstanding as Skink and as the delusional kidnapper. Hiaasen creates an outrageous yet believable character with Skink, the wizened “old fart” and peculiar protector of the environment, as well as Richard’s bigfoot-obsessed stepfather Trent, the Gar Man, and Malley. Richard and Skink set off to rescue Richard’s cousin, who has run away to meet a man she met online.
Throughout the book, Hiaasen raises an environmental tone without being preachy. Set in Florida, the habitats and problems of animals ranging from turtles, catfish, gar and other fish, feral hogs, alligators and woodpeckers all make their way into the book.
