Three quartets: the first is fiery and exciting; the second is mysterious and shadowy; the third (with the addition of the soprano) is tragic. These are deeply affecting pieces by a master composer, and they belong with the more well-known Bartok, Schoenberg, Shostakovich, and Ligeti quartets as giants in the twentieth-century string quartet genre. They combine Schoenberg’s interest in (a)tonality and formal structure with Ligeti’s use of precision and interest in timbre, and substitute some Latin American folk material for the Eastern European and Russian influences in the Bartok and Shostakovich (and Ligeti). If that's too analytical, never mind; they're also fun to listen to. Brilliantly and expressively played, as well.
