Ray Porter is a buttoned-down 50-something executive who reaches out to a much younger woman as his Los Angeles playmate. Mirabelle, a 20-something with a pile of promises, debt, and depression, fades away in a slow corner of Saks, while trying to sell unneeded formal gloves. She's a wisp of a person, with a cat who doesn't love her, and when she finds a suitor, it's Jeremy, a scruffy artist who babbles on about speakers. When the gentlemanly Porter calls, his appearance in her life begins to make her whole. It also immediately sets her up for sadness, because Ray thinks of Mirabella as a precious outlet for sex, while Mirabelle, very mistakenly, sees Ray as a potential lifelong mate.

Slow moving, boring movie with a strange plot. 3 times there is a narrative that is not necessary and does fit with the movie.
Not worth your time.

A masterpiece although the novella is more intense. I like Claire Danes' character so much, I named my car 'Mirabelle'.

I really like Jeremy. He reminds me very potently of one of my friends(:

Jason's character is funny and enjoyable, Steve's has a likability, as does Claire's - but in the end the movie was stopped by me after about 25 minutes because perhaps it felt too dull, depressing, and maybe a little too predictable.

Outside of 1 or 2 laughs from Steve Martin, this is strictly a serious movie about relationships and its many emotional stages and conundrums.

If this were not written by Steve Martin, I most certainly would not have watched it. But - after having done so - I must admit that I found it somewhat enjoyable.

I love this film and have returned to it many times. It is a mature and subtle romantic drama based on a novella by Steve Martin. He stars in the film along with Clare Danes and Jason Schwartzman. It is a funny and sad story about love and the varying degrees to which people are emotionally available. Martin is wonderful in an uncharacteristically serious role and the other two leads are great as well.

Nothing interesting happen! Very boring!

It's sweet. It's sad. It's quirky. You know how Steve Martin is. Nice.

Good – Mirabelle (played by Claire Danes) is lonely and very vulnerable. Vulnerable to the point that the suitors she allows herself to be involved in may not be suitable for her. She meets Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman) who’s never grown up and needs a serious lesson on relationships (and is extremely annoying). Mirabelle goes against all her instincts and red flags and goes out with him despite his many issues. She then meets a much older gentleman, Ray Porter (Steve Martin) who also is trying to figure things out for himself. Jeremy rides with a rock band and learns to be a man while Ray, who is much more mature and intelligent, relies on his own self to find the answers. The movie works because of the realism of the characters and the emotions they elicit. The film is also based on Steve Martin’s novel of the same name; Martin also adapted his novel into this screenplay. I felt for Mirabelle and Ray, both lost and trying to find a port to dock.
