Funny, fast read. If you like the author's picture books, you'll probably like this series. Third-grader approved!

Reminiscent of Hank the Cowdog and other famous farm/ranch heroes, the chicken squad is serious about their duties in the yard. When the squirrel comes to them for protection, they deliver. So much fun to see these little chicks do what they think is necessary to make things right. Looking forward to more adventures with Poppy, Sugar, Dirt and Sweetie!

The Chick Squad faces some difficulty with their witness, Tail, a squirrel who has trouble describing what he has seen that scared him. Sugar's interrogation of him shows how exasperated she is, in a hilarious way. Once they have identified what they think the object is, the chicks are on a mission to save their mom. Absurd antics ensue. While designed for children, this book can appeal to adults looking for lighthearted humor as well.

They may be small, yellow and fuzzy, but when the chicken squad is on the case, the mystery is sure to be solved! Lots of fun as a read-aloud and especially great for children graduating beyond easy readers.

An irreverent reversal and send-up of “Chicken Little”, this story is both clever and foolish. Both the panicky squirrel and the super-calm chicks get into a spot of bother but it all comes out right in the end. The misadventure turns mainly on the seriousness of the protagonists and the revelation of the “big and scary” danger. The whole bit is wrapped up by an amused, wise dog and a very patient mother hen and proves that when intelligence is brought to bear on stupidity, intelligence can be the loser.

Funny and fabulously illustrated. Great early chapter book for grades 1-3.
Fans of Scaredy Squirrel and younger readers who listen to Hank the Cowdog will enjoy this.
