I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was a nice change of pace to have a female YA protagonist that was not insecure/brooding/snarky/stereotypical. In fact, she was very likeable without being someone I’d normally like; I could relate to her desire to overachieve and perfectionism and propriety and her dislike of swearing (points for this), but she was also the preppy cheerleader type that I normally dislike. Great balance of the unexpected. David was also very likeable; kinda sassy, with the cute sweetness. The secondary characters were meh, though; Bee and Ryan in particular were both nondescript. I liked the plot a lot; it definitely had a Buffy feel to it. Loved the twists at the end, and I'd love to read the sequel.

This book had got me right from the begining, It was a intense read and it kept growing, and growing. It was a very interesting read, And I liked how it had modren in it, But also magic, but not forcing it to a "Magical land 'n things" book that I just cannot read. Very fun read, I enjoyed it.

Meet Harper Jane Price, a polite Southern society girl, who’s just been handed an unusual destiny. All she wants to do is attend her Cotillion, wear a lovely white dress and dance on the arm of the sweetheart she’s been dating since high school. Instead, she’s been randomly selected to be a tough protector for a boy she doesn’t even like. Think “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” meets “Gone with the Wind”.

Genteel, well spoken and an ace at shopping, Harper isn’t happy about her new role as warrior, especially if it means she might die young. When she rejects it, we understand her decision because the author does a bang-up job of letting us know Harper’s dreams, plans and inner desires. She’s not some feckless, reckless teenager wanting to sow her wild oats. She’s a scholastic over-achiever and has genuine plans to attend college and carve out a brilliant future. Being a superhero was not on her agenda.

Harper’s increasingly desperate attempts to keep her life on some even keel while practicing to be a Paladin are funny, painful and ultimately uplifting. Here’s a girl who tries, for better or worse, to fulfil her duty while carving out her niche in life. She’s—let’s say it—spunky, endearing, strong and feminine right down to her pearls and high heels. She’s proof that storybook heroines come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and accessories and that you can be kick-ass in diamonds, organza and lace as well as leather, jeans and steel-toed boots.

A hilarious and charming book! Although I don't like the fact that David reported so many false things about her in the newspaper, I loved how their relationship developed from enemies, to friends, and then something more. I applaud Rachel Hawkins for not treating Harper's boyfriend, Ryan, horribly. Ryan was a good boyfriend to Harper, and it's a testimony to how long they've been together. Relationships, platonic and romantic, tend to break due to growth in individuals. It's normal and I love that it was the main reason for their breakup in the end as opposed to cheating. While it could be considered a love triangle, both males had their pro's and con's.
