Add a CommentI picked this up because of the glowing reviews and I was in a hurry. I read just past halfway through because I was strapped for reading material. This should be in young adults, it would do ok there. Maybe.
This one is a thorough blending of sci-fi and fantasy storytelling, with a very YA feel. The worldbuilding is interesting, but the real appeal is the human element. Lots of nice character moments.
I really enjoyed reading this story. I was completely surprised by the direction and unfolding of the story.
Towards the end, I think the author took a very easy route in finding resolution, but overall this was a fun read.
I could have read this book in one go had I not been interrupted by sleep and work.
This is EFP, "Extruded Fantasy Product" as the current glut of mediocre-to-awful fantasy novels are known in online forums.
This one has a typical heroine: "Adara the Huntress" [tawny supple sexy!]. It's politically incorrect to point out such things, but women make mawkish narcissistic superheros too. Lindskold's heroine is an exact female equivalent of Sylvester Stallone.
Anyway: it started ok, but [and this is subjective], just never gained momentum. After the first hundred pages i just didn't care whether Adara and her pals found the McGuffin or not.
[McGuffin was Hitchock's term for the plot device, the excuse for all the emotionalizing, human relationships etc., like say the Maltese Falcon in that movie].
There is much better fantasy than this; but mostly historical.
You may disagree, but unless you LOVE her style, you'll be as annoyed as i was by her cliff-hanger ending.
