I definitely learned about Communist China. I also learned that my culture is so different from the author's that it becomes tedious to read about a successful physician who remains sickeningly loyal to a family that detests and abuses her. The concept of "disowning" a family member is foreign, AND the obsession with wills and inheritances.
I don't get it.

This book made me really sad, however Adeline had the courage and persistence to believe in herself. What terrible parents....I cried for her a lot to hear how much they and some of her siblings were always putting her down, disgraceful.!!! In our country today this would be severe physical and emotional abuse, she was such a young child. lucky she had Ye Ye and Aunt Baba, again parents so cruel..I would love to be able to contact her and tell her of my admiration for her...

Reading this book, I learned a lot about Chinese history and culture. Though I don't often read memoirs, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It was fast paced, descriptive in the right places and especially interesting. I would recommend it for sure.
