This is NOT the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast. This is based on the original fairy tale by French author Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. In this version, Belle's father is a wealthy merchant. She has two sisters who are selfish and mean. Their father loses all of his money and they are forced to move to a small house in the country. On a return trip from the city, Belle's father becomes lost in a blizzard and comes across the Beast's home. The Beast says he will kill the man for taking a rose from the garden for Belle. The father pleads for his life and the Beast agrees only if he returns with Belle. The story ends much the same as the Disney version except instead of angry villagers, Belles sisters are nasty schemers.

The illustrative style of this book is very different. It reminds of something from the Victorian era. Many times the characters are drawn as silhouettes while only certain parts of the page are in color. This makes the pictures intriguing. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous in a sophisticated way and the details draw the eye.

It is nice to see a version of the original fairy tale. However, this also means it hasn't been prettied up making it appropriate for the little ones. The Beast says he will kill the father and then Belle. He calls himself ugly and stupid. The sisters are mean and manipulative. This book is advertized for ages 4-7, but I would not read it to ages 4-5. Although this story is too mature for the little ones, I would highly recommend it for ages 6 and up. Even grades 2-4 would enjoy the more mature version of this fairy tale and the illustrations.
