Meet JR, a small Jack Russell terrier with a big heart.
JR and his owners, George and Nadya, along with his canine friends Robert, Pie and Beatrix, have just arrived in Prague for a much-anticipated holiday. They’ve been invited to visit Nadya’s brother, a member of a travelling circus that is currently performing in Prague. Understandably, the dogs are very excited.
However, JR and his friends soon realize that all is not well with the Sergei Circus. The animals are unhappy, and morale is poor. Everyone is discouraged and attendances at the performances are falling. When a dazzling new circus arrives in town, people line up to see it instead. The performers at the Sergei Circus – both animal and human – will soon be out of a job if something doesn’t change quickly.
To help, JR comes up with a plan, but its success depends on the co-operation of some feral cats that he and his friends had previously chased away. Now he must find them again – especially Kisa. However, the cats are now in hiding and are doing their best not to be found. JR and his canine friends race against time to find them so that his plan to save the circus can be put into action.
Rachelle Delaney’s book would be an excellent choice for children who enjoy dogs, cats and upbeat stories. It can be enjoyed with or without first reading the prequel, The Metro Dogs of Moscow, which was a finalist for the 2014 Silver Birch Award.
