As usual, a complex plot. Brunetti, lover of old books, gets a direct call from a small but pretentious library he once visited as a student. The director is beside herself because the guard has discovered a handful of ancient books, donated by one of Venice's richest women, are missing. Worse, she had promised her entire collection on her death. Even worse, she's nasty, and a friend of Brunetti's wife's parents. It doesn't take long to learn that the American professor who came with immpeccable credentials wasn't who he said he was, the man known as "Tertulian" because he quietly read the Church Fathers wasn't who he claimed either; nor was the guard who was supposed to check everyone''s briefcase as they left. But who were any of them? Brunetti's love of old books helps crack the case, though murder intervenes.
