Add a CommentDelightful. Hardy writes in pastoral writing style, a snapshot of the times, but sometimes meanders from the main plot. Though, I didn't mind the crisp descriptions of the weather, detailed and beautiful descriptions of music, and never have I been more interested in sheep herding. The overall feel is that of longing for the farming and small village lifestyle. The story has some plotlines that are gems, but for the most part, I was not invested in any character's plot. Gabriel Oake is a pleasing main character.
