Akyol explains how 'traditionalist' Muslims ignored the mostly peaceful and flexible Quran and instead used Hadiths to create a strict, intolerant and violent Islam that many Muslims believe in today.

An interesting and thought provoking look at Islam. The book goes into the history and how culture and politics effected its interpretations. Highly recommended.

Mustafa Akyol's intense read of the history of Islam and its development covers the subject in minute detail. From poltics, to economics exposing sociological mores and norms, one comes away with a more humanitarian view of Islam. At the same time, are the ironies and idosyncrysies that Islam has claimed as its own copied from some of the belief systems in the Christian Old Testament? Through tolerance and resistance, have multiple dictorial successions and religious clerics shapped Islam into something that the prohphet Muhammad had never intended? At least this book brings the discussion to the forefront in age were the understanding of those who are different or the same, allows us to be mesmorized into a trance of shock and awe, with all its nasty glare.
