BOOK 6

The worst book she's ever written. This is a tour of caves with an interesting plot event every once in a long while. 788 pages of Ayla visiting of every sacred cave in the land, with detailed descriptions of EVERY SINGLE dot, mammoth, squiggle, cave bear, etc on the walls. Jean Auel would have done better with a photographic coffee table book. At least we would have had some clue of what she was seeing. And we didn't need to "hear" the dreadfully banal "The Mother's Song" 13 or 14 times. Or a complete listing of all of Ayla's names every time she met someone, accompanied by a phonetic spelling out of Ayla's accent ("Greeeetings!"). Or a recap of former books 5 or 6 times. Part 3, when Ms Auel finally decides it's time to develop a plot is almost worse than the caves. "Contrived" does not begin to describe what happens. I finished this book only because I have loved Clan of the Cave Bears and The Mammoth Hunters for 30+ years. I couldn't stand to read every page and started skipping whole sections - and it still took me 3 weeks to get to the end. A sad ending to what was an awesome series. (PS - Her editor, if she had one, should have been fired.)
