Unlike others, I could really care less that the title song is absent from the soundtrack. Whatever the actual reason for that, it just leaves more room for the score. Thomas Newman has a long history of composing scores for a rich character based series of movies, such as the Shawshank Redemption, Little Women, or the Horse Whisperer. This is his first real go at a full blooded action thriller, and he succeeds. Some of his signature character based music can be found here, but he's just as comfortable with the big action sequences, mixing in the classic Bond theme along the way. The cues accompanying the climax of the movie are particularly memorable. A terrific Bond score, and a good sign of what Thomas Newman is capable of. It's good to see him branch out into this genre.
would have scored it much higher had Adele's song been included but its not. This is all a score, no lyrics. There are 30 tracks and many of them sound repetitious. However, the ambitiously grand scale and number of instruments used to create such a full sound makes up for some of that. It is not a stand alone soundtrack, these are tracks to listen to as you watch the scene for which they are created.
