It is the summer of 1956 and Stevens, an aging English butler, will never be the same again. For the first time in three decades, Stevens looks back on his long life of service and finds himself confronting the dark undercurrent in the life of his previous employer, Lord Darlington, and his own often painful friendship with the housekeeper, Miss Kenton.

The narration of this audiobook is among the best I've ever heard, it certainly makes the book better too. Self-discipline and dignity combine to a diabolical form of most polite torture.

I totally loved this book and recommend it to anyone who is interested in beautifully written fiction as well as WWII history and life in the old Britain.

I loved listening to this novel. It seemed to end somewhat abruptly though with no acknowledgement that this was the end of the book like all the other audio books I've read.
I loved the preciseness that seems to be characteristic of all things British.
I was sure hoping for some insight on the part of the butler, Mr. Stevens, that he needed to be a bit more human and not such a perfectionistic robotic person, totally married to his role as a great, dignified butler.
The author's note sheds light on how a person of Japanese decent could write about this aspect of British culture.
