This is a horror short story that uses onomatopeic language and powerfully realistic illustrations to convey a growing sense of menace. Most of the pictures show a midnight world, one of darkness, gloom and shadow—not a good time of night to be traveling, even on a swift horse. The unease of John Leep is perfectly captured by the “clip clop” noise of an unseen rider. The reader is kept guessing of the identity of the unknown stalker right up until the very end, in a startling show of someone leaping out of the dark and crying “BOO”! This is a fine little book to convey the shivers and perfect to read to the little ones at Halloween.
