SUMMARY: Loula is fed up with her horrible triplet brothers so she decides to leave. She packs her most favorite items in her suitcase. Then she tells her mother and father that she is leaving for Africa. But they are too busy to pay attention. Loula leaves the house and climbs a tree. Gilbert the chauffeur finds her there and asks what she is doing. He informs her that she is not in Africa, but he will show her the way. Gilbert takes her on a trip to the park, pretending they are in Africa all the while, and they have a grand time. Finally, Loula is tired and Gilbert takes her home.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in watercolor and ink. They are a bit vague (no mouths for expressions, muddy details) , giving it a fantasy like quality.

This is a sweet story about a girl who needs to get away for a little while and the chauffeur who understands and makes it happen. I love how Gilbert played along with Loula's fantasy of going to Africa, gave her the attention she so badly needed, and how they had such a magnificent day. Every one needs a day off to go to Africa once in awhile!

Fans of Ludwig Bemelmans' Madline will love Loula - the feisty heroine, the story and the illustrations. Instant classic!
