London, 1876 and Hetty Feather is just a tiny baby when her mother leaves her at the Foundling Hospital. The Hospital cares for abandoned children -- but Hetty must first live with a foster family until she is big enough to go to school. Life in the countryside is hard but with her 'brothers' Jem and Gideon, she helps in the fields and plays imaginary games. Together they sneak off to visit the travelling circus and Hetty is mesmerised by the show, especially Madame Adeline and her performing horses. But Hetty's happiness is threatened once more when she is returned to the Foundling Hospital. The new life of awful uniforms and terrible food is a struggle for her. But now she has the chance to find her real mother. Could she really be the wonderful Madame Adeline? Or will Hetty find the truth is even more surprising?

I read it, and by the middle, I was disgusted. It's so boring and all about this old fashion stuff. Not as good as the others.

Slightly enjoyed it, my sister liked it more than I did but I think sometimes it's a bit boring as it's all about finding her mother and then nothing happens for a while. I think Jacqueline Wilson has to move on from the subject of 'finding my real parents' because so far a lot of her books are based on that.
Overall pretty average, and Hetty is a character like any of her other interesting characters: fierce, fiery, hot-headed. Not one of Jacqueline's best novels.

London, England, 1876. A baby girl, one of many, is left outside the Foundling Hospital. She is named Hetty Feather and sent to live with a farm family who have children of their own. For the first five years, Hetty's life is a happy one, especially the time she spends with Jem, an older boy who is part of the farm family. Red haired Hetty is determined and outspoken. At five years of age, Hetty is returned to the Foundling Hospital but she is convinced that she can flee the horrible place and find her real mother. Hetty is certain that she found her real mother when Jem took her to see the circus where she saw a redheaded performer in a pony act. When Hetty finally manages to get away, she realizes how big the world outside is. How will she ever find her mother? Reviewed by BPL volunteer LS
