I enjoyed the portrayal of Polonaise. Being a female artist during this time period would not have been easy, especially when also being a mother. Gabriel's support of her was heartwarming.

About the series: Having read some of the books of the Lonely Lords series and not in order, I'm starting from the beginning and the characters are easier to place. I actually recommend beginning with Darius.

What a disappointed this book was! Gabriel was introduced in Beckman's story and I adored him and though he was so interesting...but this story went nowhere and all the unique, compelling aspects of his character were drained off as the story progressed. I thought that his brother Aaron and his wife were more interesting than Gabriel and Polly ended up. Also, the resolution of Polly's conflict was silly. Her daughter comes off, frankly, like a brat, and the author does not explain how they are going to explain the circumstances of her daughter's birth. Lastly: I was annoyed that Polly and Sara never reconcile with their parents, whose greatest crime seems to have been naivete.

p 243 "We lose our children," Sara replied, smiling sadly. "If we're lucky, we lose them to a happy, meaningful adult life with families of their own."
