Dempsey’s Lodge is the perfect getaway for families and young couples: the fishing is good, the air is fresh, the scenery is breathtaking. But beyond its pristine beauty and simple pleasures seethes the complexity of life: prejudice, love, lust, and betrayal ... not to mention murder.

Dempsey's Lodge by Eric Wright was a meandering, digressive and unsatisfactory story. Several minor characters' backstory were unnecessarily told by the characters themselves in long winded anecdotes that, to me, brought the novella to a halt. The point of these little stories seemed to be self-contained as they had nothing to do with the larger story at all.
As for what Dempsey's Lodge was all about, I don't know. I think it was supposed to be something akin to a quaint romance story. Or was it supposed to have been a murder mystery that never developed. Up until the death, the set-up seemed to suggest a possible mystery. Nothing came of this.
While I presume the story was set in the present with several mentions of mobile phones, the honeymooning couple's story seemed weirdly out of touch with how twenty something's of today would presumably behave.
A number of the sub-plots didn't resolve at all. What happened to the moose and calf? The resolution of the main character - the Brendan Copp story line - arrived without any particular drama or urgency. Not even a a suggestion of other possibilities. It just was.
All in all, a boring novella.
