I was not a fan of this second book to much because I thought the story took a bit long to get rolling. But with that said, the ending is action packed and I love the writing so I shall continue on to the last book.

The first book, Dark Currents, was decent, with another feisty heroine who surprisingly wasn't a constant smart-mouth.
But this sequel starts out with wall-to-wall gratuitous cheaplike sex that turned me off completely.
Gah!

Jacqueline Carey has changed a lot throughout her writing career and has shown that whether she's writing deep, complex, books full of rich imagery, or something quicker, they bring worlds and characters to life. If you are a fan of Patricia Briggs, this series will appeal to you.

I am a huge Jacqueline Carey fan, but this is not her strongest book, not even compared to the first book in this series. Yet it was a fun quick read. The town of Pemkowet is almost more compelling than anything else in the novel. It's so lovingly described and detailed, it made me want to live there, at least for the fall season. Obeah magic is the big bad of this novel, and I wish it had been explored/included in much more depth than it was. Because of the lightness and episodic nature of the series, the threats never seem as real or harrowing as Carey is capable of writing. In this way, the Agent of Hel books seem much more like a weekly tv show, which is fine if that's what you're looking for. I'd still recommend it.
