"A" is a work of fiction in which André Alexis presents the compelling narrative of Alexander Baddeley, a Toronto book reviewer obsessed with the work of the elusive and mythical poet Avery Andrews. Alexis develops this narrative through a reflection in essay form presented as an annex that builds layers of thought upon not only the original narrative, but provides Alexis' own motives (and perhaps, obsessions) behind writing "A."

A phenomenal little book. Fresh, fantastic writing. Don't let the cover mislead you: this is the story of where a writer's inspiration comes from (hint: it comes from a hospital, like an illness, or a cure), and is set in modern-day Toronto. Highly recommended.

A meditation on the author's craft and, in particular, the question of where inspiration comes from. Very enjoyable (and short!).
