Lovatt Island is one of a group of uninhabited islands, near the isolated village of Innellan in south-west Scotland. The skeleton found in one of its sea-caves, shackled to the rock, looks like the relic of some long ago conflict between rival smuggling gangs, but the modern watch clasped around its bony wrist gives the lie to that.

The first chapter introduces all of the characters, except for DI Margery Fleming and her team, which was a different approach to novel writing for me. There were just too many characters'names to remember and left me wondering how all of this information fitted together. Once DI Margery Fleming was introduced to the story, however, the story structure became more familiar with deaths that needed a motive, clues to follow, and a murderer. Focus for the setting is on a small community and an off shore island in Scotland so lovely landscape description. Several twisty plotlines as well as more detail on Fleming's family life as the children grow up and decide what paths to follow.

I found this author recommended on Goodreads.com so started to read her series about a DI in small Scottish town named Marge Flemming. This is an excellent series with complex plots and very good character development. Try to read series from the beginning or you may get confused about what is happening. Lots of details but very little blood and guts, sex or swearing. Makes a treat from some of the other crime writers these days.
