"When CAKES AND ALE was first published in 1930, it roused a storm of controversy, since many people imagined they saw in its pages recognisable portraits of literary figures now no more. The tumult and the shouting soon died down, leaving the story to take its place as one of the finest of Maugham's novels. It was also the one for which he most wanted to be remembered. It has about it a sense of perfection that is rare in a novel and a lyrical warmth that one would look in vain for elsewhere in Maugham's writing."

This one makes my BEST EVER TOP TEN LIST! The jokes are largely over my head British Humor - the writing clever and long, the plot long and Maughamly - what else would anyone want? A seaside, a romance, a writer coming and a writer going - London at the turn of the century... it's all there for the taking... Who knew such a bright side of the world could be painted by Maugham?

All right, though it went on and on a bit in parts. I liked the overall story and characters, but it felt like there was too much build-up for nothing in some cases.

This is not a great Maugham book but a good read.
