Seamlessly melding real-world threats with magical arts, Ms. Meloy continues outlining the perils of Janie, Benjamin and Pip. They’re older now and have older concerns but they still have the arrogance of youth that demands autonomy from their parents. They’re all keeping secrets and secrecy, as they learn, has a way of backfiring.

Her writing remains sharp and clear, taking us into the various milieus in which the characters find themselves. This time they are traveling all across the globe, with intricate plots, deceptions and lies that at times seem so convoluted you wonder how they’ll find their way out of each mess. The book zings with adventure, threat and action sequences as diverse as escaping cannibalistic natives to swimming underwater without needing to breathe.

The characters, old and new, are vibrant personalities that help or hinder our intrepid heroes. The action rarely flags and when it does there’s plenty of interesting dialogue to keep any reader involved and eager for more. This novel is a wonderful example of magical realism and Ms. Meloy’s writing more than delivers.

This might have already been implied, but THIS BOOK IS FRICKIN' AWESOME. I read it in one night. Meloy has outdone herself this time!

I read The Apothecary and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! I can't wait to read this one, I'm sure it'll be just as good if not better. For all you people who haven't read The Apothecary it is a great read, and The Apprentices is the sequel. Enjoy! -Sami♥
