When the men of a remote Hungarian village go off to war in 1916, the women left behind realize their lives are much better without them. Suddenly, they are not being beaten; they have time for friendships; they even find romance with the injured Italian soldiers staying just outside of town. For Sari, an intelligent girl who's always been an outcast (her fellow villagers suspect her of being a witch because of her medical knowledge), it's the first time in her life she's had friends. When the men return at war's end, the freedom Sari and the others have enjoyed is suddenly snatched from them, and they realize they need to do whatever it takes to hold onto it. Sari puts her medical knowledge to use to off her husband. Then she helps one of her friends. And another. When the word spreads, she realizes her problems are only beginning. This creeping and hugely readable first novel is based on a true story.

I liked it OK despite a somewhat slow start. The premise was not the least bit surprising to me & I have little doubt similar events did occur. What was well described & IMO factual is the acceptable beatings men give women - some really despicable humanoids who have so little power otherwise. Beat up on women, kids & the infirm. Not surprising is the attraction between POW inmates & village folk. I was surprised at no resultant births and or STDs. It did not especially remind me of Beguiled, only in the result of death.

There is so much info available these 100 years later, as to the mind & body damage the soldiers suffered. It's rather irked me that so few people in the US have even a clue about this war; how the US entered; the attitude of superiority to US participation. Traveling throughout Great Britain. even the smallest villages honor these soldiers, the devastation & sacrifice to generations. Not so different from the next one WWII.

This book reminded me of The Beguiled (1971) with Clint Eastwood, only that film was set in during the Civil War rather than a small Hungarian village. The Angel Makers deals with some weighty subjects without seeming too much like a Lifetime movie.
