À la carte wisdom from the international bestseller. In Bringing Up Bébé, journalist and mother Pamela Druckerman investigated a society of good sleepers, gourmet eaters, and mostly calm parents. She set out to learn how the French achieve all this, while telling the story of her own young family in Paris. This book distills the lessons of Bringing Up Bébé into an easy-to-read guide for parents and caregivers. How do you teach your child patience? How do you get him to like broccoli? How do you encourage your baby to sleep through the night? How can you have a child and still have a life? Alongside these time-tested lessons of French parenting are favorite recipes straight from the menus of the Parisian crèche and winsome drawings by acclaimed French illustrator Margaux Motin.--From publisher description.

This was a good summary of the book, although I don't remember some of the "tips" listed here, and others made more sense in the context of her narrative (which is removed for this brief utilitarian version). I appreciated it more than I think someone who just picked this one up would because it is like she took the notes on her own book so others wouldn't have to. It would be an interesting set of principles to compare with other cultural parenting books.

Interesting little book. One benefits tremendously from reading Druckerman's previous book for context and explanation.

Despite the fact that "Bébé Day by Day" reads like a Coles Notes version of its prequel, "Bringing Up Bébé," the new book crystallizes the french parenting philosophy. Easily read in an hour or two, what this handy reference guide lacks in originality it makes up for in accessibility.

Both of Druckerman's books have influenced my own parenting through their emphasis on creating a "cadre:" freedom within a firm set of boundaries. Treat the child as a member of the family, not as the center of the family. Give the child responsibilities that contribute to family life. Teach your child self-control by insisting on polite waiting. Respect a child's autonomy and independent play time. Ultimately, this book offers a look at a calm home of loving, assertive parents who don't shy from saying, "C'est moi qui décide."
