Strong plot and difficult to watch movie.
As onions, it has many layers of lecture and certainly will require more than one viewing to grasp the whole meaning in it.
Impressed with the plot and the characters.
Thumb up!.

What separates this amazing film from the usual crop of crime dramas is that the focus is not on police procedures but rather on the dark and complex character of Jacky. A heavily muscled brutish man given to fits of violent anger, Jacky’s haunted eyes hold a terrible secret which director Michael Roskam slowly, almost reluctantly reveals through a series of childhood flashbacks. He is a tragic figure embodying both a sorrowful yearning for the things he can never have and an impotent rage against the cold realities that delineate his life. Taking small comfort in the illusion offered by the many steroids he snorts, pops and shoots, Jacky personifies the question of what makes a man a man. Given the recent cinematic glut of gun-toting macho stereotypes it’s refreshing to see a director make a sincere attempt to explore the more fragile recesses of the male psyche.

Jacky and Diederic, the main protagonists, haven’t seen each other for decades when they find themselves joined in a criminal enterprise relating to adding growth hormones to cows, etc. to increase their value. In their childhood, they became estranged when Jacky was brutally beaten and injured for life by the town bully. This film was a great mix of crime thriller and personal tragedy of an innocent person damaged for life. Jacky is played by Matthias Schoenaerts, who also starred in Rust and Bone, but I did not recognize him because in Bullhead he plays a man shooting himself with steroids (puffed out body and face). I suspect that director Roskam and Schoenaerts are destined for fame, as they have made another film together, which will getter broader viewing as it is in English. I subtracted a half star, as there was a late five or ten minute comedic feel reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy which I feel inappropriately broke up the unbelievable intensity of the film.

Great movie. like someone else, I stumbled on this...was interested in seeing the French/Flemish background just out out of curiosity about Belgium and found a film with an intricate suspense and real depth of character development that you just don't see very often. as I believe one of the promos points out..chances are you will like Jackie but not who he is or why.

This movie is as brilliant as it is stupid. The story for the most part is very well written and you get the feeling of a very good Quentin Tarantino movie in the making with many interesting characters and sub stories but for the final climax you are left with nothing. One of the worst endings ever. Given all this hype this movie got, it was a real let down.

This was an unexpected gem of a film to stumble across. Yes, it's grim, and there are some parts that are hard to watch, but the story is fully engrossing.

One particularly violent and cruel scene calls for warning about extreme violence in this flick. And it makes one wonder if it's justified. The gritty plot is very intense and certainly gripping. The director shies from overtly calling for sympathy, but has he gone too far in that direction? Only one speech by the protagonist, very near the end, tells us clearly about his tortured mental state ....and, then, it may just be too explicit! Previous moments - the way he glances at kids, how he pursues one woman - did enough hinting, although the silhouetted boxing was a bit elusive. In sum: artists do have to juggle very fine balances between overtness and concealment (or having the story do all the telling), and this flick intrigues in that it teeters on that edge. Left me wondering.

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

Intense, well-acted foreign crime darma/character study. Graphic. Some great scenes of symbolism. I didn't love the movie, and it seemed a little overlong, but I did like and enjoy it for the most part.
