Haile Selassie, King of Kings, Elect of God, Lion of Judah, His Most Puissant Majesty and Distinguished Highness the Emperor of Ethiopia, reigned from 1930 until he was overthrown by the army in 1974. While the fighting still raged, Ryszard Kapuscinski, Poland's leading foreign correspondent, traveled to Ethiopia to seek out and interview Selassie's servants and closest associates on how the Emperor had ruled and why he fell. This " sensitive, powerful. . .history" ("The New York Review of Books") is Kapuscinski's rendition of their accounts-- humorous, frightening, sad, groteque-- of a man living amidst nearly unimaginable pomp and luxury while his people teetered netween hunger and starvation.

Great reporting, reminds me of Svetlana Alexievitch.

I have enjoyed all of Kapuscinski's works and not seen any credible, fact-checked or referenced information discrediting his work. Kapuscinski comes from an era of "boots on the ground journalism", partly due to the micro budget he was given from his original communist Polish newspapers. It's so easy nowadays to throwaway a negative comment anonymously online. Go exercise your democratic freedom and read whatever you wish.

Whether or not this book is a reliable history, it is nevertheless a wonderful read. Kapuscinski reveals the bizarre rationalizations that infect the corrupt like a parasite that eventually destroys its host. It was a real page turner for me, fascinating and, 'freerootical's' criticism notwithstanding, a revelation of the working details of this particular despot.

The author of this book, Ryszard Kapuscinski, has since been discredited. He was a propaghandist and wrote many books that were not based on fact. If you want to enjoy a piece of fiction about Haile Selassie, then read this book.
