Fox is bored and wants to try something different. Every day he catches fat toads by the pond. He goes to a book store and reads that he should be catching small toads that are young and tender. Fox sets out and catches a bag full of young toads even though it is more difficult work. As he is getting ready to cook the young toads, Mama toad comes along and tries to persuade Fox not to eat her children. She shows him how to make a recipe called Toad-in-a-hole which doesn't involve toads at all. The Fox and toads sit down to eat this delicious treat and no toads are harmed in the process.

The illustrations are made digitally. They are bold and heavy on color.

At first I was disturbed by this story as it talks about skinning, boiling and eating toads and the fox is excited about eating the legs of the smallest toads. He has a row of knives he is prepared to use in the cooking of the toads. But the story turns less violent when Mama toad comes on the scene. The violence troubled me especially because this book is advertized for ages 3-7. Perhaps skipping the more graphic words while reading this aloud for the littlest ones would make it work better.

Throughout the story, the young toads create quite a bit of mischief in the background which is fun to watch and gives you the feeling that Fox would never be able to hold on to those toads long enough to eat them.

At the end, the author includes a recipe for Toad-in-a-hole so you can make your own after reading the story. This is the American version of Toad-in-a-hole (egg inside of toast) not the British version that includes sausage.

Really funny. We loved the pictures and seeing what all the little "toadlets" were up to while their Momma was trying to save their skin.

A silly story that is sure to get some giggles, and some yums from your kids. Ends with the recipe for Toad-in-a-hole toast.
