On the banks of the fictional River Deben in Suffolk lies a set of barns dating back to the Anglo-Saxons, within their walls secrets have laid buried for centuries. Zoe and Ken have just moved into one of the barns, ready to start a new life away from the hustle and bustle of the city. To the outside world they seem like an ordinary couple, but underneath they are growing more distant by the day. And Zoe feels a strange prescence within their home and sees ghostly shapes through the mists on the river. Nearby farmers are ploughing the land beside the river and sets of human bones are found. Are they linked to a Victorian murder? What is the secret of the ancient grassy mound that remained untouched for centuries but has now been disturbed with seemingly devastating consequences?

Moving through three time periods, this story resonates through the ages with people that come alive in each era. As each story progresses mysteries are revealed about the Suffolk area and the history that shaped it. Meanwhile a ghost Viking ship glides gloomily through the mist on the river, propelling fear before it.

A supernatural mystery slash romance that weaves Anglo Saxon, Victorian, and present day storylines quite effectively. However, several of the characters were extremely unlikeable and the ending was quite predictable which kept me from really enjoying this book as much as I have other Erskine titles.
