Diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease nine months earlier, Nate is about to leap off an 11th-floor ledge of a bank building in Santa Monica, Calif., when he notices a robbery in progress through the window next to where he is standing. Nate climbs back in the window undetected, grabs a handgun a masked man has conveniently set down, and, thanks to his ROTC firearms training, succeeds in shooting dead five of the six robbers. In revenge, the thwarted theft's mastermind, a notorious Ukrainian mobster, vows to brutally kill Nate and his teenage daughter unless Nate can retrieve the robbery's objective: an envelope stored in one of the bank's safe deposit boxes.

The beginning chapter hooked me. One deed leads to another which leads to another so the plot keeps moving until it comes full circle - for me later than sooner. The author could have ended this story several times before he actually did, but some might like this drawn out wait for the end due to the action that ensues. The author makes the most of his main character on the run and then when the time is right after many false starts, the violence starts. Motives of characters are carefully worked out. Teenage characters are cardboard cut outs. Their teenage chit chat got annoying and too many mentions of "dudes" for my liking. Skipped the pages where the characters get affectionate and where ordinary family life is assumed around the dinner table with the family dog in the background. In a way the reader knows the final outcome.

Kind of a depressing read overall - - a cross between a comic and a soap opera, I guess?

I rated this book as average but the ending was disappointing!

It's not a bad book at all, but I feel like once you've read a couple of books by Hurwitz, you've read them all.

I really liked this one. It grabbed me right from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

As with all of Hurwitz's books, this was a non-stop action-filled read. The reviews are 100% on!

Great thriller story.

"Traumatised Army veteran Nate Overbay has had better days, but isn't anticipating any more - dying from Lou Gehrig's disease, he's decided to accelerate the process by jumping from the 11th floor of an office building. But the sound of gunshots brings him back inside, where he foils a bank robbery and becomes a reluctant hero. Unfortunately, he also becomes the target of the Ukrainian mobster behind the robbery, who uses Nate's daughter to force him into completing the heist he interrupted. A new novel from author Gregg Hurwitz is usually cause for celebration, and this one's no different. Fast-paced and full of action, and with a unique hero to boot, The Survivor "succeeds on every level" (Kirkus Reviews)."
